0:00 It was a hard-fought campaign that took many, many months in the making. People from all over this city welcomed me into their backyards, into their neighborhoods, told me about their hopes and dreams for the future of this city and trusted me to tackle the problems we have. I am also incredibly grateful to the thousands of volunteers who knocked on doors, made calls, sent texts, talked to their neighbors, talked to their families, talked to their friends to tell them about a vision of Los Angeles that looks different, more hopeful than the one we have today. I also wanted to express my deepest gratitude to Mayor Bass for her decades of service to this city.
0:54 We had the chance to speak this morning and we both share a love for Los Angeles and her service: her decades of service at the Community Coalition, as an emergency room nurse, her decades of activism in South Los Angeles, her work in Sacramento, in Washington D.C. and as the city's first female mayor. All of this has made Los Angeles what it is today and a deeply, deeply inclusive place for me. What is the embodiment of the American dream?
1:22 A place that welcomes people, a place that welcomes people and invites them to build their dreams here. It invites them to build their dreams here and she helped build that dream here. And I know that her service is something that people across the United States are grateful for and certainly every person in Los Angeles. We also committed to working together on the smoothest possible transition for Angelenos.
1:54 We love this city, we want to make it an incredible place in the future and our teams are already in contact to ensure that every aspect of this transition of city government is as smooth as it needs to be to ensure that services for Angelenos are as good as they need to be. So I want to thank you all for being here and I am here today because, you know, this morning was when the news was confirmed and I am here with my team, both from my council office and my campaign, just to share a few moments of gratitude and unity. So I want to thank you all for being here too and all of you.
2:44 Can you describe this moment of having this officially confirmed? When you look around and see your team, do you think about the fact that you are now going to be the mayor of Los Angeles? This city alone has given me and my family so much, and at a time when in the federal government over the last two years we have seen a country that has rejected immigrants and in so many ways the immigrant dream. I am an immigrant in this country, and this is a city of immigrants in many ways. Whether they came from across the United States or from across the world, this city has opened its arms for people to come and build their dreams here.
3:37 And the idea that Angelenos voted for an immigrant to be their next mayor at this moment in American history moves me deeply. And I want to tell every Angeleno out there, I am going to work very hard and everyone behind me is going to work very hard to earn your trust. To earn your trust and to earn the trust, to earn the trust of everyone in this city and make people believe in Los Angeles again, to believe in their city hall again. Absolutely. Saying there are LAPD officers and others who feel anxious about the uncertainty regarding the possibility of major cuts to the LAPD.
4:30 Will there be major cuts to the LAPD, and do you still plan to fire the police chief? >> You know? I have already spoken with the leadership of the Los Angeles Police Department. In fact, I am speaking with Chief McDonnell. I spoke with him earlier today and it was one of the first calls I made because public safety is the most important service the city provides to its people. It is undoubtedly the most important service, and I want to make sure that whatever happens during this transition, we are prepared to offer that service at the level Angelenos expect when I take office in mid-December.
5:05 And I know that Chief McDonnell is committed to that. I am committed to that, and we will continue those discussions. Uh, >> Mayor, what is perhaps your plan for the first 100 days? Have you started to develop a sort of checklist of the first things you want to do, like, for example, on the first day? >> You know? We released a 100 - day plan during the campaign.
5:25 I will say that in the few hours between when the results of this election were confirmed and now, I have mainly received congratulatory calls and spoken with people and just tried to ensure our transition is ready to begin. We have 40 days to build this transition. It is one of the shortest transitions in the whole country for a city of 4 million people where the challenges are absolutely immense. That transition is going to be absolutely critical, and today's work was about starting that transition with the skills, the people, and the priorities we need to ensure our first 100 days are successful. That is what today was about, and when we have more to announce on what that transition and the first 100 days will look like, we will share it with you.
6:13 >> I have a question for you. Alright. What are you going to do to work with the council? An entire council, a membership that is not on your side? >> You know? I already spoke with many of my council colleagues today, and I will continue speaking with them in the coming days. And with every person, the conversation was exactly the same.
6:37 Uh, congratulations for me and my commitment to them, our shared commitment to work together for the betterment of this city. It doesn't matter what happened during the campaign; that is in the past. And all of us, every member of that city council and I, are here because we love Los Angeles and we know we need to work together to address the challenges ahead. And every conversation was about making that mutual commitment, and to the people of this city. We will work together to improve it.
7:10 Thank you. When you get to city hall, what are your main plans when you come to work at city hall? >> You know? We, we have a, the key priorities we have heard throughout this city are homelessness, housing costs, public safety, and economic development. These are the issues that are on everyone's mind in every neighborhood. Whether you are in Studio City, in Sylmar, in San Pedro, in Wilmington, or in Boyle Heights.
7:43 These are the four key issues that came up time and again. These will have to be the priorities I take on at City Hall, and we will have more plans to share as we can implement them. Yes. Last question. Last question. To the people in Los Angeles who don't know who you are and to the people who didn't vote for you or didn't vote at all, what is your message to those residents? >> Yes. So, uh,
8:11 I know that many, many people across the city voted for Mayor Bass or didn't vote in this election at all. And I think that is a sign of the deep distrust and cynicism that has taken hold here in the city of Los Angeles. My goal is to earn their trust. My goal is to make sure we are doing the work to have a city hall that is capable of delivering on the promises I made during the campaign. That is what this transition is about, that is what the coming weeks are about.
8:41 That is what my first 100 days will be about. We have great challenges here in this city and they have been present for a long time. What we have not had is a city hall capable of facing them. That is the promise I made during the campaign, that we will build that city hall and that is my commitment to every person. Whether you voted for me or you didn’t, or you abstained completely in this election, I want to ensure we can restore your trust in City Hall again.
